SUN 12.28
City Pages Artists of the Year 2008

Hello all,

To my surprise, David Mura selected Sun Mee Chomet and myself for the City Pages Artists of the Year Issue 2008. He was very sneaky about it - he didn't tell us he was doing it, and I got a mysterious call from City Pages asking for a bio pic last week.

In addition to the obvious ego-cake this provides me (which I will eagerly devour like a starving man), in all seriousness I want to thank David Mura. As an established Asian American artist who was asked to choose Artists of the Year by a major periodical, he chose two local Asian Americans. Not everyone would do that - in fact, I don't remember anyone else ever doing so. And in addition to that, not only did he write about Sunmee and myself - he cleverly and graciously wrote about our entire Asian American community. He deftly subverted the whole idea of exceptionalism/tokenization of people of color for a mainstream press and wrote about the importance and emergence of all of us Asian American artists here. How cool is that?!

http://www.citypages.com/2008-12-24/news/sun-mee-chomet-and-thien-bao-thuc-phi/

BTW, for those of you non-Minnesotans, City Pages is kinda like our Village Voice or The Stranger.

Egocakealicious,
Bao

Thanks

Hello all - I've been very busy with performing and work, thanks for everyone who has stuck with me and asked about my website. You'll still find updates here from time to time, and I hope to learn more about web stuff this holiday and get something running in the new year. For now, thanks to everyone who has welcomed me on my travels and performances over the last few months (special thanks to UNAVSA in Portland, DVAN and Isabelle Pelaud in San Francisco, and Boston College) - and if you're on Facebook and/or Myspace, definitely 'friend' me there. On Facebook, i've started an "FOB" Friends of Bao list, where I send out occasional info.

Soon, y'all, soon. Until then, much love and peace, Bao.

Summer

Hello all,

Summer has been very busy - among other things, acting in Q & A was an intense process, in many different ways, and work/community organizing as well as changes in my personal life have kept me very busy. But I wanted to thank uNAVSA for inviting me to their 5th conference in Portland this past summer - I had a great time performing and thank you all for your kind words and the opportunity. Thanks also to Central Michigan U for hosting myself and Carrie Lennox and giving us the chance to show and discuss The Listening Project at your Leadership Conference.

The Nguyens CD is done and has been selling well - at this point, because of costs, it only makes sense for me to sell it out of my backpack. EMAIL me with any reading requests - thanks and peace,

Bao

Q & A

Friends,

So, as some of you may know, the reason why I've missed 1) your calls 2) your parties 3) your readings 4) going to see Iron Man with you these past few weeks is, I've been either at work or rehearsal. I'm in a new play called Q & A, and would love to have you all check it out. It runs May 22 - June 8.

In short, this play is really important to me and I'd love it if you came/helped spread the word.

Okay, if that's enough to get you to come to the play/make a reservation without my wordy long-winded isht, just scroll all the way down to the information far below...

If it isn't, here is my effort to persuade you:

1) First, and most obviously, I'm in the play. We've been busting our *sses working on it, 6 days a week, in addition to our day jobs etc. My co-actors, Katie Leo and Laurine Price, are immensely talented people whose acting is in my opinion worth the admission price by itself. And me? Well, I haven't acted in 8 years, and it's been a terrifying, and exhilirating, experience for me. So we'd love to have your support.

2) Support Asian American theater. There are far less people who'd give Asian American theater a chance as opposed to, say, Iron Man. We need you to vote by filling in the seats.

3) Support politically bold, relevant, refreshingly original, and provocative Asian American theater. This play is groundbreaking, and I think it has the potential to be very transformative both within our own community and within the arts community at large - and, most likely, nationally. And it's the debut: you can say you saw it first, here in Minneapolis.

4) Show your love for LOCAL Asian American theater and artists. The writer, director, actors, videographer, and theater company are all local Asian American folks. And everyone from the set designer to the fight coordinator to the costumer - local Minnesotan. All the folks, from the director (David Mura's first time directing!) to the assistant director (Harry Waters, generously donating his time), everyone, has worked so hard and been so on top of it.

5) Support great writing. The script is excellent. Original, daring, clever, funny... and is not afraid, during our unsettling and disturbing times, to be intelligently and provocatively political. I can't say enough about it. I'll be real with you: I was really, really scared and apprehensive - not to mention self-conscious - about trying to act again after all of these years (not to mention that I look like a lumpy potato next to my amazing co-actors). But this script is really something special, such opportunities do not come around so often. The writing is extraordinarily sharp. And I happen to know that the writer spent a great deal of time and effort on it. Great job love!

6) For my fellow nerds, there's a line I deliver that is closely similar to one delivered by Hudson (Bill Paxton) in the movie "Aliens". You'll have to see the play to see which one. If that doesn't draw you in, I'm taking away your nerd card.

7) "But the tickets are kind of pricey." My people, I feel you. Really I do. I won't give you the same argument - you know - how most people who are apprehensive about supporting local artists of color wouldn't think twice about blowing twenty bucks at the multiplex to see "What Happens in Vegas". What you do with your money is your call. All I can say is, we're worth it. And I'll make a deal with you: if my powerball numbers win me a jackpot, I'll buy all y'all tickets.

LIKE THAT. Mark your calendars and make reservations. Thanks for reading.

Q & A
by Juliana Hu Pegues
Mixed Blood Theater
Directed by David Mura

Three Asian Americans: a wanna-be rapper, a pothead, and an intellectual are thrown into a world of speed dating and interrogations. Known only by their numbers, 187, 1/2, and 9066 must answer questions about their racial and sexual identity, moving from the current moment to a future world where government repression spawns an underground resistance. In an unsure time and place where each is suspect, they will have to ask what they are ultimately guilty of, and choose or betray an alliance. Q & A is a funny, fanciful, and frightening journey into the heart of who we are and how we define ourselves in America.

Refugeography SOLD OUT (sort of)

Dear friends and supporters,

As of November 6, 2007, I am almost out of copies of Refugeography. Because Omnidisc, the original manufacturer, basically ran off with about $2,000 of my money, and because it's a double CD that I tried to sell at a cheaper price, the costs of printing more copies is prohibitive. So, for at least the time being, Refegeography is sold out, until I somehow find more money to print more. If you've purchased a copy prior to this date, don't worry, I have enough to honor your order and the CD is probably on its way to you right now.

If you are reading this and still want a copy, I have approximately 50 left - but they'll most likely be burned copies. You'll still get the same quality CD, the CD's full color booklet and everything, but it won't be plastic wrapped. If you still want one, I'll probably sell it to you at a discount. If so, inquire directly to baophi@gmail.com

I want to thank everyone for supporting Refugeography and the labor of love that it's been. It couldn't have happened without you.

Until then, I'm touring with Giles Li and Kiwi on the Beats Rhymes and Rice tour and also as a solo artist. Lots of shows coming up all over the country - so please look for me.

Peace,
Bao

The BAP

Friends,

I received my two complimentary copies of the Best American Poetry 2006 in my mail yesterday (in which one of my poems is included). Okay most of you already know that the prestigious series selects a different guest editor every year and they read through hella (like thousands) of poems and they pick their favorite 75 and this year former US poet laureate Billy Collins saw my poem in Michigan Quarterly and picked it blah blah blah... well, funny thing is, that little voice in me said, you know, they probably made a mistake and when the books come, your poem will not be included or they'll start a new section for the series called "Poems That Suck" and yours will be in there. You know, the happy sunny thoughts that I am known for.

Anyway I got my copies and my poem is in there. So even if it's a mistake they can't take it back. SUCKERS! If you get a chance, take a look at it next time you're in a book store - if for nothing else, read Billy Collins' hilarious and sharp introduction to the book, and i'm not just saying that because he mentions me twice - it really is a fun and refreshing read regarding poetry. I've read some of the poems in the anthology, and a lot of them are shameless, bawdy, and full of character, lots of fun to read - perfect company for me to be in. I'm sure a lot of the established poets are going to have a field day ripping this particular volume of BAP to shreds. Oh well, check it out before someone forces a recall or something.

And before you ask, no, I don't get any royalties from sales. Dang. There goes my dream of finally fixing the alignment on my car.

Bao

p.s. special thanks to Rebekah Linh Collins and Barbara Tran for publishing 'Race' in the Michigan Quarterly Review in the first place.

Bay area fam,

thanks again – it seems fitting that the first big Nguyen series show happened in the Bay at Locus. What a great crowd, it felt really great to read the poems there. And thanks to those of you who took the time out to come through, to hang out, eat and catch up, it’s been too long. Y’all know I almost moved there a year ago? It’s been the closest I’ve ever been to moving out of MN. I hope I see y’all sooner rather than later. Included in this email is a lovely pic by David Huang (like my ‘vintage’ Jane Kim shirt?) and links to hella pictures taken of my show and the trip to the Bay:

Bao gets BAP'd!

I got an unexpected call today informing me that Billy Collins, this year's guest editor for the Best American Poetry series (and U.S. Poet Laureate 2001-2003), selected one of my poems, Race, to be included in Best American Poetry 2006 to be released this Fall.

Usually the guest editor reads and selects poems that have been published in literary journals and magazines during the year - in my case, the Michigan Quarterly Review. So I had no idea I was even being considered to be included in the prestigious series, let alone that I had made the final cut. After reading thousands of published American poems, the Guest Editor selects 75 of the "best". I’m jazzed that Billy Collins selected one of my poems - though I’m sure that Harold Bloom will lambaste him for having bad taste once he sees my poem included.

Anyway, I am a bit stunned by the unexpected honor, and also a bit tickled that I am to be included in a series I was forced to read during my college years. I hope this means I win the powerball next!

Peace
Bao

Shang-Hi! Ha, get it? Ehhhhh....

Hello from Shanghai, homies. You know, at restaurants here, they don't automatically serve rice with meals because of this Atkins carbohydrate shit? Can you believe it? Asian people not eating rice? Shit is f*cked up.

Anyway, things are going great - the website is up and we'll be updating it with journal entries and sample video as we travel, so check it out at www.americalistening.com

Some sample footage from our Mexico is already up, as well as our journal entries and a poem I wrote about Juarez. There is also my first journal entry about Shanghai so check that out if you're curious. I'll be updating my journal regularly, and the filmmakers hope to get some short sample videeo footage of Shanghai up before we leave for Paris, so definitely check the site often if you're into that type of thing. Which I know you are. Since y'all are fascinated with e'erthing I do. Yeah.

Peace

p.s. the only artist i've heard in both Shanghai and Juarez? Lil' John.

APIA community...you...COMPLETE...me!

Heya all,

so this mushy letter is *not* inspired by the Holiday season, I swear it! What actually inspired me is, I was contacted by a group of Asian American students who were doing their final project on APIA hip hop and spoken word, and they wanted to talk to a devastatingly handsome, talented, and well-liked artist in the community. Well, Ed was busy, so I agreed to meet them for coffee, where I forced them to buy me french fries. One of the last questions they asked me was, "do you think that you have made the APIA spoken word and hip hop community a better place than it was 5 or 10 years ago?"

Now, somehow I was able to overcome my naturally conceited nature, and said, "no, I didn't make it better, we all did. Every one of us, every APIA spoken word artist, rapper, fellow artist, community organizer, activist, our families and friends, all the community members, we all have made it better."

And I meant it. When she asked me that question, it reminded me how lucky I feel, how fortunate that we have this community. It used to be, when I went to another city or did a show somewhere, I hoped that there would be at least 1 Asian face in the crowd. Likewise, as an audience member I used to hope to see a face and hear a voice that somehow related to me and our community on stage. Nowadays, there doesn't seem to be a city or place where there isn't some connection, some group of APIA's doing their thing. Sure, we've had our differences and disagreements (and continue to have them), but who doesn't? And i'm not writing this to insinuate that we're all good, that we don't have a lot of work to do ahead of us, because we do. I'm just saying, I'm proud to be a member of this community, i'm glad of it, and i'm thankful.

See, I made it through this email without making any self-deprecating, sarcastic comments! Now, let's all hold hands and sing 'we are the world' together.

Oops. Well, close enough.

Your biggest fan,
Bao

Hey folks, seems like a lot of people are down. Yeah, about the elections, but of course a lot more than that. Too much to even mention, it seems patronizing for me to even try. So I follow my gut, and my gut has been gravitating to one of my favorite songs, by the late great Sam Cooke. Thought the lyrics might resonate with y'all, too. -Bao

I was born by the river
In a little tent
oh and just like the river
I've been running ever since

It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh, yes it will

It's been too hard living
But I'm afraid to die
I don't know what's up there beyond the sky

It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will

I go to the movies, and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me,
Boy don't hang around

It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees

There's been times that I thought
I wouldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh, yes it will

Hey lovely friends,

thought I would send you some links to pictures of my past week in the Bay. What more can I say? Wonderful people, some great shows - and the new poetry chapbook (which Doug designed beautifully) completely sold out! And... speaking of Doug's designs, I got my first ever tattoos while out in the Bay.

Me and my friend Carolyn Tran went to a Vietnamese tattoo artist in San Jose, referred to us by our good buddy Tony Nguyen - he had gone there earlier to get his tattoo and was very happy, you can see his tattoo in the pic links below since he came with us to hang out! Yeah I know, I don't seem like a tattoo type of person, but I had my reasons - mostly it was an early birthday present for myself, a celebration that I will make it to 30 years of age, a sign of change and ongoing struggle not just to work for the community but the ongoing struggle to be a better person, to relearn Vietnamese (the writing is a Viet poem), the ongoing struggle to want to live and try harder and be better and sort out the mess of contradictions and beauty in my life.

Sorry for writing such cheesy shit.

Also my good friend Carrie Stark is in the pics, she just moved out from Minnesota to the Bay. Damn, the Twin Cities loses another cool person of color, but she's gonna be hella happy in the Bay.

Anyway, just a reminder, if you know anyone who can vote in San Francisco, PLEASE ask them to vote Jane Kim for school board. I saw first hand this past week how she has inspired hundreds of people to work on this campaign with her, not because they're getting paid, but because they believe in something, they believe in what Jane stands for, and they're getting involved. Beautiful, y'all! Why can't politics be like that all the time?! You can read more about her and donate to the cause at www.janekim.org

Sorry I have been so out of touch, I've been really really busy with a number of things...

Okay, pictures by the very talented photographers David Huang and Jay Jao:

Equilibrium Tribute: Asian American Renaissance

Hello friends,
just about to go to Texas for a big show/some workshops - but I wanted to ask y'all to PLEASE spread the word and make sure to support this last goodbye show to AAR. It's an organization that is near and dear to my heart. I turn 30 in a couple of months, a fact that has been making me reflect on a lot of things... AAR was one of the few places I could go as a young artist to get support, bond/debate with my fellow Asian artists and community members... and now we have to say goodbye. It's a really sad time - but we move forward in the hopes that pan-Asian artists will build towards the future. AAR may not have been as visible in the last few years as it used to be, but i'm hoping I can persuade y'all to remember the influence and importance of it as an organization - let's remember our history. We need your help to spread the word, and help us close gracefully.

There will be a silent auction/garage sale type of thing as well as food and light refreshments. If you can't be there but would like to make a donation towards the closing of AAR, let me or Rose Chu know. I know, it's really hard to ask for money to help CLOSE an organization rather than support its growth and life, but that's the point we're at now. We were the only pan-Asian, multidisciplinary arts non-profit in Minnesota, so let's all come together and at least help the organization be remembered fondly and without any type of debt.

If any of y'all were planning on getting me something for my 30th, just give to AAR instead/come to this show. It's really important. I want to say more, but the fact that AAR must close down makes me very angry, and very sad, so before I go off on something, i'll just stop here and ask again that you all help AAR out in any way that you are able. -Bao

Considering the AAR journals, cabarets, performances, artist regrant programs, community festivals film festivals, and summer youth programs devoted to Asian Pacific American artists, it is not difficult to imagine what the arts scene in the Twin Cities would look like without this important organization.

Unfortunately, due to a changing climate and the harsh reality of funding for the arts, AAR will be forced to close her doors. The Loft, through its popular Tribute series, wants to make sure that such a valuable and beloved organization does not fade from our memories, and recognize the trailblazing efforts of this landmark organization. On October 9th, artists and community members old and new will celebrate and remember the importance of Asian American Renaissance while looking at the bright future of Asian Pacific Americans in the arts. Please join us for poetry, storytelling, music, dance, fine art, and a special closeout sale of AAR artifacts, arts and services by AAR supporters. ]

Hello everyone - the website will be updated soon. Look for more new poems, essays, and pictures! I've been busy writing, and was able to take quite a lot of time off and set aside a bunch of time to write, thanks largely to the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Assistance Fellowship I won! Woo hoo! So i've been pushing in some new directions with the poems and writing. Thanks for your patience - look for updates soon soon soon.

Love, Bao

Dear Equilibrium supporters and friends,

two great shows next week! The great New Americans
series continues at Intermedia Arts on Friday - combining
film with performance poetry. Friday, we will continue the
theme of families of color being refugees/immigrants,
including an amazing short film featuring one of my favorite
writers, Andrew Lam!

Also, DO NOT MISS David Mura and Alexs Pate's show!
They haven't done a show together in a while and we're all
excited to see what they have for us. It's always a good
show when just one of these guys in concerned - imagine
them sharing the stage together! Please come support
our wonderful local artists of color, and spread the
word - we need to rely on alternative ways of getting the
word out because, well, you know.

I will provide the full details of the Intermedia show
seperately - here is the info on David and Alexs!

Saturday, June 5, 8 p.m.
Equilibrium presents DAVID MURA and ALEXS PATE
At the Loft, 1011 Washington Avenue South
$5/$3 for students and Loft members

How do politics effect art, and vice versa? What happens
when ideas of race taught by the mainstream are
internalized by people of color? Why are the emotional
lives and relationships of men of color ignored or
dismissed so readily?

Award-winning writers Alexs Pate and David Mura will
combine old and new work in a special collaborative
reading and performance. Building on their past
The Colors of Desire collaborative project, Mura and
Pate offer a compelling alternate vision of being artists,
men of color, and friends. As political statement and
art, their show will be a provocative and utterly
necessary statement seldom seen or represented
in the mainstream.
